Today, Jalema wants to adress the issue of sustainability. This theme can be interpreted in various ways. This blog therefore devotes extra attention to a sustainable way of archiving, which is important for various Dutch authorities and government institutions.

Keep documents for at least 100 years!

It may sound a bit dusty, but various agencies are still obliged to physically store important documents. Do you work for a government institution, for example? As an employee, you are even obliged to keep certain documents for at least 100 years! Such a long period sounds unrealistic, is it not? You may think that the number of physical archives is decreasing, and of course that is the case. Yet various archives are still filled with information, don't underestimate that!

Store documents acid-free

If you are dealing with the long-term storage of important documents, it is important that these documents are kept in the correct condition. In 100 years' time, they must still be in exactly the same condition; the colour must be retained and the text must still be perfectly legible. Not all storage folders are suitable for this purpose. An important feature of folders that are suitable for this purpose is that they must be made of acid-free cardboard. This means that the cardboard does not contain acids that could affect the papers.

Strict ICN quality requirements

Jalema's collection includes a complete series of folders, the Infinio series, which meets the strict ICN quality requirements set out in accordance with the Dutch Archives Act. One of the most important conditions of this Act is that governments must bring and keep their information in a good, orderly and accessible state. Ultimately, the information must be easily retrievable within the next 100 years. If the documents are stored in a folder in the Infinio series, you can assume that these documents will still be perfectly legible in 100 years' time. Extremely handy for your successors, who will then need the documents!
